Kathy and her kids were living in New York at the time when the religious exemption was being challenged. In 2018, the bill resurfaced. And then, on a day in 2019, “within 7 hours,” the bill passed through various committees and was signed into law. This came as a shock to many families, including Kathy’s, who were given just a few months to get up-to-date on their immunizations or else face potential expulsion from school.
