Chairman Rick Scott, Ranking Member Kirsten Gillibrand Announce Aging Committee Hearing to Examine Domestic Production of Essential, Generic Medicines
WASHINGTON, D.C. – ‘On Wednesday, November 19, Chairman Rick Scott and Ranking Member Kirsten Gillibrand of the U.S. Senate Special Committee on Aging will be convening a hearing titled “Made in America: Restoring Trust in Our Essential Medicines.” This hearing will spotlight U.S. companies that are successfully producing essential, generic medications domestically, highlighting the role of American manufacturing in ensuring drug safety, creating jobs, and protecting national security. Committee members and witnesses will examine barriers to onshoring, including regulatory hurdles, foreign price manipulation, and supply chain transparency issues. Building on two previous hearings, the committee will explore strategies for reducing reliance on China and other foreign nations while promoting domestic innovation and competition.
‘This hearing continues the chairman and ranking member’s ongoing efforts to strengthen America’s drug supply, including letters to major U.S. pharmacies, FDA Commissioner Martin Makary, Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., pharmaceutical distributor executives, and group purchasing organizations, as well as an investigative report exposing reliance on foreign-made generics. The committee has also held two recent hearings, on September 17 and October 8, to examine the potential threats from foreign dependence and explore solutions to boost domestic manufacturing and ensure Americans’ access to safe, high-quality medicines.’
